UK youth to be offered military ‘gap year’ in bid to boost defence: Report

In 2026, the UK Ministry of Defence will launch a paid "gap year" program for 18-25 year olds to boost military recruitment amid rising tensions with Russia. Initially open to 150 applicants, the program aims to expand to over 1,000 annually, offering military experience without active deployment. Army recruits will undergo 13 weeks of basic training as part of a two-year placement, while the Navy scheme lasts one year; the RAF is still developing its options. The initiative mirrors similar national service programs in France, Germany, and Belgium, driven by concerns over Russian aggression. Participants are expected to receive pay matching basic recruit salaries, around £26,000.
