Hong Kong authorities to review medium of instruction in schools after major study

Hong Kong education authorities will review the medium of instruction policy in public secondary schools for the 2028-34 cycle. This review follows a three-year evaluation study conducted by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on the implementation of English as the medium of instruction in select schools, which began in the 2022-23 academic year. The study tracked changes over time to identify patterns and potential relationships. The Education Bureau commissioned the study and will share the findings with stakeholders after HKU submits its report. The review also comes after a council representing subsidised secondary schools requested that the government allow more schools to teach subjects in English to improve students' preparedness for English-language higher education.
