Israel says it will keep control over part of southern Lebanon after war with Hezbollah ends
Following the war with Hezbollah, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans for Israel to maintain security control over a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, extending up to the Litani River. This area would include the demolition of homes in Lebanese villages near the Israeli border. Lebanon's defense minister and international bodies have condemned the plan as a potential occupation of Lebanese territory. Since March, the conflict has resulted in over 1,238 deaths in Lebanon, including civilians and aid workers, and displaced over a million people. Israel reports 12 deaths on its side. Israel states its aim is to protect northern Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks by establishing a defensive line inside Lebanon.
