In Pictures: Four years of Ukraine war

Four years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the conflict continues with immense human and physical costs. The UN reports over 15,000 civilian deaths, including at least 763 children, and over 40,600 injured. Military casualties are staggering, with estimates suggesting Russia has suffered approximately 1.2 million casualties and Ukraine between 500,000 and 600,000. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, with 5.3 million seeking refuge in Europe and 3.7 million internally displaced. Cities have been devastated, and infrastructure, including healthcare and energy facilities, has been targeted. The year 2025 saw a significant increase in civilian casualties compared to 2024.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year since Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the conflict has caused widespread destruction across the country. Entire cities in eastern and southern Ukraine have been reduced to rubble due to intense fighting. The World Health Organization has documented over 2,800 attacks on healthcare facilities, and Russian strikes have severely damaged energy infrastructure, leaving millions without essential services. A significant portion of Ukrainian territory, approximately one-fifth, is contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance. The World Bank estimates the cost of reconstruction in Ukraine to be around $588 billion over the next decade.
