Djibouti's president wins unprecedented sixth term with 97.8% of vote
Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh secured a sixth term in office with 97.8% of the vote in the recent election. The 78-year-old leader defeated his sole challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar, who received 2.19% of the vote. Most of the opposition boycotted the election, alleging a lack of free political activity. Guelleh, who has been in power for 27 years, ran after a constitutional amendment removed the presidential age limit. Djibouti's strategic location on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route, makes it a significant location for international military bases, including those of the US, China, and France. Guelleh is only the second president of Djibouti since its independence from France in 1977.
