Israeli attacks killed over 38,000 women, girls in Gaza since October 2023, UN says

A UN report released on Friday stated that Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip killed over 38,000 women and girls between October 2023 and the end of 2025. Palestinian health authorities estimate the total death toll in Gaza to be over 71,000 by the end of 2025, rising to over 72,000 by mid-April. UN Women's analysis indicates that women and girls comprised over half of all Gaza victims by the end of 2025. UN organizations believe the actual death toll is higher due to bodies remaining under rubble and difficulties in documenting casualties. The report also indicated that nearly 11,000 women and girls in Gaza survived with injuries resulting in lifelong disabilities.

Despite a supposed ceasefire in place since October, Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of several Palestinians over two days, April 16-17, 2026. The incidents occurred in various locations, including Beit Lahiya, Zeitoun, Khan Younis, and the Shujayea neighborhood, with victims including children and civilians transporting water. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, Israel has committed thousands of ceasefire violations since October, including killings and blockades. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports that at least 765 people have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire began, adding to the over 72,340 deaths since October 2023.
