Hong Kong heatwave to persist before showers bring relief later this week

More frequent showers expected later this week should bring relief from Hong Kong’s extreme heat, the city’s weather forecaster has said, although scorching conditions will persist in the coming days, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach at least 37 degrees Celsius (99 Fahrenheit).The Hong Kong Observatory said on Monday that outer subsiding airflow associated with Tropical Cyclone Dolphin continued to bring extremely hot weather to Guangdong and Hong Kong. The heat is expected to persist until Wednesday or Thursday, with high temperatures increasing the likelihood of thundery showers.Upper-air disturbances will bring unsettled weather later in the week, with increasing showers potentially easing the intense heat, it said.Temperatures rose above 32 degrees across much of the city on Monday morning.Wong Tai Sin recorded the highest reading, at 35.1 degrees at 10am, followed by Happy Valley at 35 degrees. Yuen Long Park, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Sai Kung, Kowloon City, Clear Water Bay and Tsuen Wan Shing Mun Valley all recorded temperatures above 34 degrees.A very hot weather warning remains in force, while the Labour Department has issued an amber heat stress at work warning.
