Francis Smith, the oldest inmate in the US, has died at the age of 101 after serving over 70 years in prison. Smith was convicted of murder but one arresting officer later testified he believed Smith was innocent and not present at the crime. He experienced several brief periods of freedom, including an escape in 1967 and a parole in 1975 that was revoked for violating its terms. Smith rejected further parole attempts until 2020, when he was granted supervised parole and moved to a care home. His case highlights a growing issue of aging inmates within the justice system, a problem observed in other countries as well.
