‘Normal stability’: US-China Track 1.5 talks offer formula for ties

During recent semi-official Track 1.5 talks with Washington, a senior Chinese official, Liu Haixing, head of the Communist Party’s International Department, proposed a framework for US-China relations. He urged both nations to pursue "normal stability with controllable disagreements." Liu suggested that expanding shared interests and rejecting zero-sum game mentalities are crucial for achieving positive stability through cooperation. The talks, held on Tuesday, also emphasized the importance of managing competition and finding common ground to bridge differences. The overarching goal, according to Liu, is to foster healthy stability characterized by well-managed competition and controllable disagreements.
