US Congress seeks to identify foreign countries behind scam calls

US lawmakers are intensifying efforts to combat a surge in phone scams by identifying foreign countries responsible for unlawful robocalls. This initiative follows government reports linking significant scam-related financial damage to Chinese criminal networks operating in Southeast Asia. The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Communications and Technology Subcommittee recently passed the bipartisan “Foreign Robocall Elimination Act.” This legislation mandates the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create an inter-agency task force dedicated to addressing illegal robocalls originating from abroad. The goal is to pinpoint the primary foreign sources of these disruptive and damaging scam calls.
