The ship was being fixed by Beihai Shipbuilding Co. in the port of Qingdao — one of the country's major shipping hubs — when it caught fire at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time, the Xinhua news agency reported. A total of 42 people were on the vessel at the time of the blaze, and 12 of them were safely rescued, Xinhua reported. Five others were injured and taken to the hospital, where they are in stable condition. The Associated Press reported that the fire was extinguished at around 2:30 p.m., a little over three hours after it started. Videos online showed plumes of white smoke billowing from the ship. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Chinese authorities have not said what sparked the blaze while the vessel was undergoing repairs.
