Beijing pushes AI-assisted chip design as part of self-sufficiency drive

China is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into semiconductor design software to enhance national self-sufficiency. Empyrean Technology, a leading Chinese electronic design automation (EDA) tool provider, is utilizing AI-optimized algorithms and agentic tools to speed up the chip design process. According to company chairman Liu Weiping, applying AI agents to simulation and layout tools has reduced the time for a circuit layout task from four weeks to one week. This initiative is driven by Beijing and domestic technology firms aiming to bolster their capabilities in chip manufacturing.
