Myanmar army air strike kills dozens in Rakhine state

Nearly half a million people are displaced in Rakhine as a result of the conflict between the military and rebel groups.An air strike carried out by Myanmar’s military has killed at least 33 people in territory controlled by rebel factions.The attack near a market in the north of the Rakhine state in the west of the country on Monday also wounded 36 people, rescue and rebel group officials reported. It said the death toll “may continue to increase”.Wai Hun Aung, a senior rescue official in Rakhine, confirmed the details to the Associated Press news agency. He said the market was the region’s main wholesale centre, drawing traders and shoppers from across the state.“This is one of the most severe airstrikes in Rakhine,” he said.
