Millvina Dean, Titanic’s Last Survivor, Dies at 97

Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the Titanic, died at age 97 in a Southampton nursing home, the same port from which the ship departed. As a 9-week-old infant, she was lowered into a lifeboat in a mail sack when the Titanic struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912. She survived along with her mother and brother, later being rescued by the Carpathia and taken to New York. Her father was among the 1,500 who perished in the disaster. Dean believed her family's third-class status contributed to her father's death, alleging that priority was given to first- and second-class passengers in accessing lifeboats.
