Australian girl, 8, killed in snowmobile accident in Japan

An eight-year-old girl from Queensland, Australia, Chloe Jeffries, died in a snowmobile accident at the Hakuba Valley ski resort in Nagano prefecture, Japan, on Saturday. Jeffries was a passenger on a snowmobile with her mother when it overturned on a forest road. She was trapped underneath the vehicle and later died in the hospital. Hakuba Lion Adventure, the tour operator, stated the snowmobile left the course on an uphill curve and flipped. Police are investigating the incident, and the tour company has suspended snowmobile and snowshoe tours. This is the fourth death of an Australian at a Japanese ski resort this year, including incidents involving a skier who collapsed, a woman caught in a chairlift, and a teenager who collided with a boundary rope. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family.
