Americans recall desperate, self-organised escapes from Middle East: ‘you’re on your own’

Following recent Israeli-US attacks on Iran, many Americans found themselves stranded in the Middle East due to closed airports and cancelled flights. Despite the US State Department claiming to assist citizens, numerous Americans report receiving little to no help from the government in evacuating. Some were advised to shelter in place and enroll in a travel program. Instead, these individuals, like travel blogger Alyssa Ramos evacuated from Kuwait, were forced to organize their own departures, often navigating complex routes across multiple countries. While the State Department says 27,000 Americans have returned since February 28, most did so independently, contrasting with the efforts of countries like Poland and Australia that actively chartered flights for their citizens.
