Signal issues scam warning to users after hackers target officials

Signal has issued a scam warning to its users after Dutch intelligence agencies identified a Russia-backed cyber campaign targeting high-profile individuals on Signal and WhatsApp. The campaign, discovered by the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) and General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), involves hackers posing as support staff to obtain account details from users, including Dutch officials, military personnel, and civil servants. The hackers use sophisticated phishing techniques to trick users into sharing SMS codes and Signal PINs. While Signal's systems remain secure, the company is taking the reports seriously and advising users not to share verification codes or PINs with anyone. WhatsApp has issued similar advice regarding six-digit codes. The campaign appears to target individuals of interest to the Russian state.
