Calls for faster rehousing of evicted Hong Kong subdivided flat tenants

Hong Kong lawmakers are urging authorities to provide more timely and flexible urgent accommodation for residents displaced by a new regulation targeting subdivided flats. On Tuesday, the Housing Bureau informed lawmakers of plans to allocate up to 180 transitional flats in urban and extended urban areas for tenants evicted on short notice. Scott Leung Man-kwong, deputy chairman of the Legislative Council’s housing panel, believes this number will suffice for urgent needs, citing restrictions on landlords terminating tenancies before contract expiry. The regulation aims to eliminate subdivided flats in the city.
