Scammers posing as police cheat 42 mainland students in Hong Kong out of millions

In the first quarter of this year, over 40 mainland students studying in Hong Kong were defrauded by scammers posing as Chinese law enforcement officers. These scams resulted in significant financial losses, with one case alone exceeding HK$8 million. One victim was even manipulated into staging her own abduction in Thailand, despite prior anti-scam training. Hong Kong police reported that mainland students represented a quarter of all scam victims impersonating mainland authorities during this period, with total losses reaching HK$289 million. This highlights a concerning trend of sophisticated scams targeting international students.
