Canadian police are warning of potential copycat attacks following a deadly shootout in Montreal that resulted in three deaths. The assailant, who was dressed in military camouflage, was killed by police, as was a civilian, with investigators looking into whether police accidentally caused the civilian's death. The gunman's lengthy manifesto, posted online by a far-right outlet, expressed grievances common to the "incel" movement, alongside racist and misogynistic conspiracy theories, and called for "a new bloodletting." The manifesto did not specifically target police but listed various institutions and groups as potential targets. The incident occurred in Montreal's Côte-des-Neige neighborhood, and the slain officer was identified as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. This event follows a pattern of attacks in Canada linked to misogynistic ideologies.

Another injured officer suffered critical injuries but is expected to survive. Investigators from Quebec’s police watchdog, the bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) areinvestigating the deaths. After the shooting, Canada’s federal police sent a bulletin to police agencies across the country warning the gunman’s manifesto is “allegedly encouraging citizens to shoot police officers”. The alert called on police to “exercise extreme caution and remain highly vigilant”.The 104-page document, which was later posted in full by Rebel News, does not specifically mention targeting police, but blames feminism, liberalism and capitalism to explain the “situation of terrible loneliness, isolation, and social degradation” he believes men currently face. The document also lists what the shooter claims are “valid potential class A targets”, including large investment banks, powerful politicians, “influential Zionists”, corporate executives in private healthcare, companies involved in environmental destruction, plastic surgeons and cryptocurrency speculators. The manifesto also mentions targeting “the headquarters of international pornography companies”.It ends with the words: “Be unflinching, go forth, and KILL THEM ALL!”Montreal police identified the slain officer as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who had been with the force since 2021. He then killed himself.Christine Fréchette, Quebec’s premier, told reporters she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by Monday’s attack and ordered the Quebec flag to fly at half mast.Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, said that he was “horrified” when he learned of the shooting. “My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, the first responders, and the entire community of Côte‑des‑Neiges,” he said in a statement posted to social media. The city’s mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, said she extended her “deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty”.
