Student drowns in River Wye while on Duke of Edinburgh’s Award trip to Wales

A student has drowned while on a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) trip in Wales, police have said.Emergency services were called to the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys on Tuesday evening after it was reported an 18-year-old male had entered the water and could not be found.Powys-police" class="entity-link entity-organization" data-entity-id="151319" data-entity-type="organization">Dyfed-Powys Police said his body was located following a search involving a Mountain Rescue team and the fire service.A DofE spokeswoman has since confirmed the college student was on a trip as part of his DofE expedition when he died.She said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a young person has drowned while on a DofE expedition in Powys, Wales.“Our thoughts are with the young person’s family, together with all those who were taking part. We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time.“DofE is liaising closely with the young person’s college and relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident happened. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.“Emergency services remain in the area and ask that members of the public stay away while inquiries continue.”Six people died last week after getting into difficulty swimming in open water in the UK.
