Some workers seek to quit smoking as ban on Hong Kong construction sites kicks in

Hong Kong has implemented a new ban on smoking at construction sites, effective Friday. This measure follows a deadly fire at Tai Po’s Wang Fuk Court housing estate last November, which killed 168 people and is suspected to have been caused by workers smoking during renovations. Some construction workers have stated their intention to quit smoking as a result of the ban. Individuals caught smoking on a construction site will face a HK$3,000 fine, while contractors face penalties of up to HK$400,000 if they fail to enforce smoke-free conditions on their sites.
