‘Our hearts are crushed’: Hannah Rapp’s violent death sparks outpouring of grief

The violent death of the US boxer Hannah Rapp, whom authorities say was killed recently by a motorist while she cycled, has left her sport, her communities outside the ring and her loved ones grieving deeply just weeks after she took her first world title shot.A statement from the Bryan Boxing gym where Rapp trained in Texas commemorated her as “an amazing lady and soul” while the Aggieland Cycling club to which she belonged recalled how her “kindness and excitement for life [buoyed] all who knew her”.“A beautiful person and a brilliant boxer is how she will be remembered by all of us,” read a social media post from Most Valuable Promotions, which promoted Rapp’s 13 June 2026 bout against the World Boxing Council (WBC) women’s featherweight boxing champion, Tiara Brown. “[Rapp] went to war and smiled right after.”Such condolences poured in after Rapp, 26, and her boyfriend went bicycling on the morning of 18 July and encountered a hatchback car on a highway in Navasota, Texas.The driver, identified as 31-year-old Charles Medina, then sped past the couple from behind, investigators with the local Brazos county sheriff’s office later wrote in a sworn affidavit. Rapp’s boyfriend responded to the maneuver by raising his hands and yelling, at which point Medina slammed his brakes, skidded to a stop and accelerated in reverse, the affidavit alleged.Medina ultimately hit Rapp so forcefully that his “rear windshield was shattered completely”, investigators wrote. He also allegedly left skidmarks from having “rapidly accelerated backwards” as well as apparently “steering towards something while backing up”, according to the legal document.Emergency responders found Rapp unresponsive and lying face down in the roadway, the affidavit said. She was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.An investigator who spoke to Medina at the scene reported that the driver claimed to believe Rapp and her boyfriend were flagging him down as he passed them on his way to pick up his mother. He allegedly said he was backing up at a slow speed of about 15mph and didn’t see Rapp until an instant before striking her.But “the physical evidence on scene, including skid marks, the severity of damage to the vehicle and the victim’s final resting position contradicted [Medina’s] account,” the affidavit said.In a statement to the Guardian, the sheriff’s office declined to say that it was treating Rapp’s death as an instance of road rage, explaining that the case remained under investigation. The agency nonetheless booked Medina on a count of manslaughter, which Texas law defines as recklessly causing a person’s death.Medina has prior arrests in connection with allegations of deadly conduct by discharging a firearm, assault causing bodily injury and reckless driving, among other purported offenses.He remained in the custody of the Brazos county jail on Tuesday in lieu of a $250,000 bond, facility records showed – and he could receive between two and 20 years imprisonment under Texas law if eventually convicted of manslaughter.Medina’s rap sheet was at the center of a Change.org petition launched on Monday which urges Texas lawmakers to pass legislation expanding judicial authority to deny or revoke bond in cases involving defendants with “documented violent and dangerous driving histories”. The Justice for Hannah Rapp petition had collected more than 3,300 signatures as of Tuesday.Meanwhile, the case left many grappling with the premature end of the life and athletic career of Rapp, a native of Yorktown, Indiana, who ran cross county at Purdue University in her home state before moving to College Station, Texas.Rapp worked there as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M University, as the Austin American Statesman reported. Beside participating in a cycling club whose name evokes Texas A&M’s Aggies sports teams, Rapp pursued a professional boxing career which saw her register eight victories and one draw in her first nine bouts.The pugilist whose sobriquet was “Hanarchy” won the North American Boxing Federation’s featherweight title and successfully defended it once during that stretch. She thus positioned herself to challenge Brown for the WBC world title at 126lb at Florida’s Caribe Royale Orlando resort.Rapp brought Brown to a decision, losing on the judges’ scorecards but earning the champion’s respect.“She was strong, tough & ready to show the world she belonged here,” Brown wrote of Rapp on social media after the challenger’s death. “Hannah is the best [pro] opponent I have faced so far.”A social media tribute video posted by the promoter Texas Combat Sports contained a clip of Rapp describing why boxing fascinated her.“I’m obsessed with the little details, the incremental adjustments and the tactics of it all – I think that’s what really drives me to it,” Rapp remarked.In the video, Rapp also shared her ambitions.“I believe in my heart that I’m a multi-world champ,” she said, adding that she envisioned putting Yorktown – population of about 12,000 – “on the map” while also honoring “the people who welcomed me into their home in Texas”.“I believe that from the start. Maybe it’s naivety, but I just trust myself and believe in myself that much, and so does my team.”In a statement addressing her death, Yorktown’s government said it would hold a candlelight memorial for her on Wednesday evening. The town’s statement referred to a social media post which Rapp had published on 1 July, saying it summarized her and her home community’s “core values”.“No effort is wasted,” the post read. “The effort IS the point. The effort IS the outcome.”Rapp’s boyfriend, in his own social media post, wrote that he was grateful for those who were “working so hard to make sure she can be remembered properly”, particularly her family.“I don’t have the strength to do these things for her right now,” he wrote. “And I don’t know how they do.”“We lost our sweet baby girl Super Girl,” a separate social media post from Rapp’s father, James, read. “Our hearts are crushed – always remember her smile.”
