Australia ramps up Aukus funding with US$3.2 billion for nuclear submarine yard

Australia announced on Friday an additional US$3.2 billion investment in its nuclear-powered submarine program. This funding is part of the Aukus defense pact established in 2021 with the United States and Britain. Under the agreement, Australia will initially receive three nuclear-powered submarines from the U.S. Subsequently, Australia and Britain will collaborate to construct a new submarine class in the 2040s. The Aukus deal, which is Australia's most costly defense initiative, has encountered scrutiny regarding potential delays in submarine production by the U.S. and Britain, raising concerns about Australia's future vessel availability.
