DNI digital

The "DNI digital" refers to Spain's digital national identity document, designed to allow citizens to identify themselves electronically via their mobile phones, eliminating the need for a physical ID card in many situations. Recently, the DNI digital was slated to become valid for use across all public administrations and private companies in Spain, beginning April 2nd, 2026. However, the Junta Electoral Central (JEC), Spain's central election board, has suspended the use of the DNI digital for voting in elections. This decision, made in response to a request from the PP political party, is based on concerns about ensuring the security and reliability of identity verification during the voting process. The suspension will remain in effect until the JEC is satisfied that the identity verification systems are sufficiently secure. While the DNI digital is still valid for most other uses, this suspension highlights ongoing debates and concerns surrounding the security of digital identification methods in sensitive contexts like elections.
