Festival de Cannes

The Festival de Cannes, the world's largest film festival, is preparing for its 79th edition, scheduled for May 12-23, 2026. Thierry Frémaux, the festival's General Delegate, unveiled the official selection on April 9th, highlighting a diverse range of films from around the globe. This year's festival is notable for its focus on historical themes and a significant absence of American films in the official selection, attributed to a decrease in the production of auteur-driven American cinema suitable for Cannes. The competition includes films from established directors like Pedro Almodóvar, Asghar Farhadi, and new entrants, with a strong representation from Spanish and Asian cinema. Park Chan-wook will preside over the jury. The festival will feature various sections, including the main competition for the Palme d'Or, Un Certain Regard, Midnight Screenings, Cannes Classics, Cannes Première, Special Screenings, and films out of competition. The event is considered a crucial platform for filmmakers and a significant cultural event.
