Operation Bear Claw

Three individuals in California have been sentenced for perpetrating an insurance fraud scheme dubbed "Operation Bear Claw." The scheme involved staging fake bear attacks on luxury vehicles, specifically a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost and two Mercedes models, in Lake Arrowhead on January 28, 2024. A person dressed in a bear costume was used to inflict damage on the vehicles, and fraudulent insurance claims totaling nearly $142,000 were subsequently filed. The California Insurance Department investigated the claims after viral video evidence surfaced, seemingly depicting a bear inside the Rolls-Royce. Biologists at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife also contributed to the investigation. The three individuals involved have now been sentenced, bringing the case to a close and highlighting the risks associated with insurance fraud, even when executed through unusual methods.
