Artibonite

Artibonite is an agricultural region in Haiti, often referred to as the country's breadbasket. It is currently newsworthy due to a surge in gang violence. Recent reports indicate a significant attack in Petite-Rivière-de-l’Artibonite, with initial reports of 16 deaths escalating to potentially 80, according to the UN. The Collective Defending Human Rights group reported at least 70 deaths and 30 injuries. The United States has designated gangs operating in Artibonite, along with those in Port-au-Prince and central Haiti, as terrorist organizations. The US is offering a reward of up to $3 million for information on the financial activities of the Viv Ansanm and Gran Grif criminal groups, highlighting the severity of the situation and the international concern over the escalating violence and instability in the region.
