Ashrafieh

Ashrafieh is a neighborhood located in Aleppo, Syria. Recently, it has been the epicenter of intense clashes between the Syrian Army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). These battles, which also affected neighboring Sheikh Maqsoud, represent some of the most intense fighting in the country in over six months. The fighting led to significant displacement, with estimates suggesting around 155,000 people were forced to flee their homes. A ceasefire was initially announced, requiring SDF fighters to withdraw from contested areas, but it subsequently collapsed, leading to further violence. Syrian forces have since reasserted control, prompting residents to cautiously return while the army conducts security sweeps for explosives and weapons. The drone strike on a governorate building signifies an escalation, widening the conflict beyond Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud. The situation remains tense, with the UN expressing grave concern for civilian safety.
