Basauri

Basauri, a town in the province of Vizcaya in the Basque Country of Spain, is featured in recent news for several reasons. Tragically, a 44-year-old woman was murdered in her home, allegedly by her 45-year-old partner, who was subsequently arrested. The suspect had a restraining order against the victim due to prior incidents of domestic violence. He was later released provisionally, with his passport confiscated and required daily reporting. Separately, the Basque government's decision to grant a third-degree prison status to Jon Bienzobas, a former ETA member convicted of assassination, allowing him to serve his sentence at home after previously being granted daily release from Basauri prison, has sparked controversy.
