Bekkersdal is a township near Johannesburg, South Africa. It is currently newsworthy due to a recent mass shooting at a tavern. On December 21, 2025, approximately twelve unidentified gunmen arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on patrons, resulting in the deaths of nine people (seven men and two women) and injuries to ten others. A manhunt was launched following the attack. As of December 25, 2025, police have arrested eleven suspects in connection with the shooting, including several suspected of being undocumented miners. The suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms, including handguns and an AK-47 rifle. The motive for the attack remains unknown, making the incident a significant concern for local authorities and residents.
