Bekkersdal

Bekkersdal is a township located near Johannesburg, South Africa. It is currently newsworthy due to a recent mass shooting at a tavern within the township. On December 21, 2025, approximately twelve unidentified gunmen arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on patrons at the tavern, resulting in the deaths of nine people (seven men and two women) and injuries to ten others. The motive for the attack remains unknown. Following the shooting, a manhunt was launched, and on December 25, 2025, police arrested eleven suspects in connection with the incident. The suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms, including handguns and an AK-47 rifle. Many of those arrested are suspected of being undocumented miners. The incident highlights issues of gun violence and potential links to illegal mining activities in the region.
