Biobío

Biobío is a region located in southern Chile, approximately 500km south of the capital Santiago. It is currently newsworthy due to a series of devastating wildfires that have swept through the area, along with the neighboring Ñuble region. These fires have resulted in at least 16-18 confirmed deaths and forced the evacuation of over 20,000 to 50,000 people. The severity of the situation has prompted Chilean President Gabriel Boric to declare a state of catastrophe in both Biobío and Ñuble, allowing for increased government resources and intervention. The fires, fueled by dry forests, have reached the coastal city of Concepción, destroying hundreds of homes and prompting desperate pleas for assistance from local mayors.
