Cauca region

The Cauca region in Colombia is currently a focal point of conflict involving illegal armed groups and ongoing military operations. Indigenous guards, who protect territories from illegal activities, are frequently targeted by these groups. These organizations aim to expand their reach for illicit activities such as coca cultivation, the primary ingredient for cocaine production, and illegal mining. Tragically, Jacob Guachetá Zambrano, a member of the indigenous guard in Cauca, was recently found murdered, highlighting the extreme dangers faced by those defending the region. In parallel, the Colombian military has reported neutralizing five members of the "Estructura Jaime Martínez," an organized armed group responsible for a deadly bus bombing that killed 20 civilians and injured 45. These events underscore the persistent security challenges and violence plaguing the Cauca region, making it a critical area of concern for both human rights and national security.
