Changzhi

Changzhi is a region in Shanxi province, central China, known for its coal mining industry. It has recently come under intense scrutiny following a catastrophic coal mine gas blast in Qinyuan county, which resulted in the deaths of 82 people and left two missing. In response to the tragedy, disciplinary authorities are investigating Zhao Yongjin, the county-level Communist Party chief, for suspected serious violations of discipline and law. Furthermore, the owners of the affected mine, operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Group, have been accused of "serious violations of the law" by the local government. As a consequence, all four mines operated by the company have been ordered to suspend operations. The events highlight significant safety failures and legal issues within the region's coal mining sector, prompting a high-level anti-corruption and safety review.
