Colorado River

The Colorado River, a vital water source for the American West, is facing a multifaceted crisis. A record snow drought, with snow cover at roughly a third of the typical amount, is raising concerns about water availability and increased fire risk. This follows a historically warm winter and rapid snow melt-off, leaving key basins in uncharted territory. Simultaneously, seven states are at a stalemate regarding water cuts needed to save the imperiled river, facing a critical deadline to reach an agreement. In a move to protect the river, Indigenous tribes, led by the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT), have granted the river legal personhood, recognizing it as a living entity with rights. This action aims to safeguard the river for future generations amidst ongoing challenges to its survival.
