Cygnus X-1

Cygnus X-1 is a black hole system located approximately 7,200 light-years from Earth. It consists of a black hole and a supergiant star in a close orbit. Recent research has, for the first time, successfully measured the instantaneous power of the jets emanating from the black hole. These jets were found to possess a power equivalent to 10,000 suns and travel at roughly half the speed of light (540 million km/h). This measurement is newsworthy because it provides unprecedented insight into the dynamics and energy output of black hole jets. The research also revealed how the strong stellar wind from the supergiant star influences and pushes the jets away. This discovery is significant as it contributes to a better understanding of black hole accretion processes, jet formation, and the interaction between black holes and their surrounding environments.
