Darfur

Darfur is a region in western Sudan currently embroiled in a brutal conflict between the Sudanese army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict, part of a larger civil war that began in April 2023, has caused immense suffering for the civilian population. Darfur is newsworthy due to the escalating violence, including bombardments and drone strikes, leading to mass displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis. Recent events include the RSF overrunning El-Fasher, the army's last stronghold in Darfur, and the army redeploying forces to retake territory in Darfur and Kordofan. Over 1,000 people were killed in one attack on a camp in Darfur. The conflict has exacerbated food insecurity, with millions facing starvation, and has led to women taking on manual labor to survive. The UN rights chief has described the situation as "horror and hell," highlighting the urgent need for aid and a resolution to the conflict.
