Deir el-Zour

Deir el-Zour, a location in Syria, is currently newsworthy due to recent investigations by the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Inspectors have begun excavating at a site believed to be linked to a clandestine nuclear program allegedly run by Syria's former government under President Assad. This development follows a UN report indicating Syria was building a nuclear reactor in the Deir el-Zour region. The IAEA's director-general confirmed the excavation activities. The announcement coincides with pledges of cooperation from Syria's new government regarding the watchdog's investigations. The excavation and ongoing investigation highlight concerns about past nuclear activities and the current government's commitment to transparency and international safeguards.
