The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) is an ultraconservative, traditionalist Catholic group that has been in a complex relationship with the Vatican. Recently, the Vatican declared the SSPX to be in a state of schism and excommunicated six of its bishops. This action followed the SSPX's consecration of four new bishops, which defied a direct plea from Pope Leo not to proceed. The Vatican has deemed this consecration an act of a schismatic nature and has also invalidated the sacraments performed by these bishops. The Pope had previously warned the group against committing what he termed a 'sin of extreme gravity.' The current relevance lies in the formal break between the Vatican and a significant traditionalist faction, highlighting ongoing tensions within the Catholic Church regarding doctrine and authority.
