Goma

Goma is a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), currently under the control of the M23 rebel group since January 2025. It's newsworthy due to recent violent events and humanitarian concerns. A drone attack in Goma resulted in multiple fatalities, including a French UN aid worker. The M23 rebels claim the drone strike hit a residential area. Simultaneously, a massive landslide at the Rubaya coltan mine, a major source of the mineral, resulted in over 200 deaths, including approximately 70 children. The mine is also under M23 control. These events highlight the ongoing conflict, instability, and dangerous working conditions in the region, raising concerns about the exploitation of resources and the safety of civilians and aid workers.
