Hindu Kush

The Hindu Kush is a major mountain range largely situated in Afghanistan, known for its rugged terrain and challenging environment. It is newsworthy due to the economic hardships faced by its inhabitants and recent devastating natural disasters. With scarce economic opportunities, some Afghan villagers in the Hindu Kush have turned to gold-panning as a means of sustaining their livelihoods. However, the region has also been severely affected by recent heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and landslides across Afghanistan. These events have resulted in significant casualties, with at least 77 deaths and numerous injuries reported. The Disaster Management Authority has issued warnings for continued rainfall, highlighting the vulnerability of communities living near river banks. The Hindu Kush's current relevance lies in its precarious economic situation compounded by the increasing threat of climate-related disasters, impacting the lives and livelihoods of its residents.
