Hodh El Gharbi

Hodh El Gharbi is a region in southeastern Mauritania that shares a border with Mali. It is newsworthy due to recent incidents involving Malian military patrols entering villages within the Hodh El Gharbi region. Specifically, on March 25th and again around April 11th, Malian army patrols reportedly circulated in villages in the Gogui commune, located in Hodh El Gharbi. These incursions have raised concerns because the border demarcation between Mauritania and Mali in this area is not clearly defined. While initial reports suggested an intrusion by the Malian army into Mauritanian territory, the Mauritanian army later clarified that the Malian patrols were operating in villages inhabited by Mauritanians.
