Specifically, two Ukrainian nationals were convicted in British courts for smuggling migrants across the English Channel, with their vessel intercepted by the Border Force and coastguards off the Isle of Wight in March 2026. The smugglers charged significant fees for passage to the UK and received prison sentences. Separately, sixteen shipping containers fell from a cargo ship near the island, resulting in a large quantity of bananas, avocados, and plantains washing ashore on nearby beaches, including Selsey.
