Ituri province

Ituri province, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and bordering Uganda and South Sudan, is currently facing a severe Ebola outbreak. As of recent reports, there have been 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths attributed to the hemorrhagic fever. The outbreak is particularly concentrated in the gold-mining towns of Mongwalu and Rwampara. This health crisis has prompted the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to convene urgent cross-border meetings with neighboring countries to mitigate further spread. Compounding the health emergency, Ituri province is also experiencing significant insecurity due to attacks by rebel groups, such as CODECO. One recent attack by these militia groups resulted in the deaths of at least 69 people. The region's history of conflict over its mineral wealth makes it a persistent battleground for various armed groups, contributing to ongoing instability and humanitarian challenges.
