Jefferson County

Jefferson County, located in southern Illinois, is a rural area that has recently gained attention due to a devastating tornado. The twister struck on a Sunday evening, causing significant destruction to several buildings. Tragically, two older residents, identified as Sarita Kimble, 62, and Delores Shelton, 83, lost their lives when they were inside their homes. At least five other individuals sustained injuries as a result of the severe weather event. The fatalities occurred in Mount Vernon, the county seat. The incident highlights the vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather phenomena and the immediate impact such events can have on residents' lives and safety. The Sheriff's office has been involved in the response and identification of victims.
