K'gari (Fraser Island)

K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is a world heritage-listed sand island and popular tourist destination off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Recent news focuses on the death of Piper James, a 19-year-old Canadian backpacker, who was found dead on a beach on the island. The Queensland coroners court determined her cause of death as drowning, in the setting of multiple injuries due to a dingo attack. An autopsy revealed evidence consistent with both drowning and dingo bites. The incident has prompted police investigations, closure of campsites, and increased park ranger patrols. While police are not speculating on the exact circumstances, violent dingo and human interactions have been increasing. Piper James' parents are visiting K'gari to farewell their daughter and a smoking ceremony will be conducted by the island’s traditional owners. The incident has renewed concerns about dingo management on the island.
