Lhende River

The Lhende River, located near the Nepal-China border, has become the center of a recent disaster. A massive glacial collapse upstream caused catastrophic flash floods that roared down its valleys, devastating communities in both Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The floods, occurring on or around August 27, 2026, resulted in a preliminary death toll of at least 165 people, with over 1,500 reported missing. Many of the missing are believed to be tourists and pilgrims who frequent the mountainous region. Entire villages were wiped out, and homes were inundated with sludge, highlighting the destructive power of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). This event underscores the vulnerability of communities in the Himalayas to climate change-induced natural disasters, particularly glacial collapses, which are becoming a growing concern in the region.
