Liberty Island, a prominent landmark in New York Harbor, is most famously known as the location of the Statue of Liberty. Recently, the waters near the island became the scene of a tragic incident. On a Saturday night, a 22-foot Bayliner speedboat carrying twelve people capsized around 10:25 p.m. The incident resulted in the deaths of a 27-year-old woman and her five-month-old daughter, who were recovered from the water by police divers. The operator of the vessel, Manuel Hernandez, has been arrested and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Authorities are also investigating whether the boat was operating as an illegal charter. The event highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the busy New York Harbor, with the proximity to Liberty Island drawing significant attention to the tragedy.
