Miri

Miri is a city in Sarawak, Malaysia, recently featured in news reports for two distinct reasons. Firstly, it is the location where a man named John Mule anak Alai was sentenced to 10 months in jail and fined 50,000 ringgit (US$12,700) by the Sessions Court for posting content deemed insulting to Islam on Facebook. This case highlights the enforcement of Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Act regarding online content. Secondly, Miri is the birthplace of actor Yong Zheng Xi, who is gaining international recognition for his role as Lord Barnaby in the popular Netflix series 'Bridgerton'. Yong's journey from Malaysia to international acting success brings positive attention to the region. Thus, Miri's current relevance stems from both a legal case concerning freedom of speech and the success of a local talent on the global stage.
