About
Mont Blanc is a massif, or mountain range, in the Alps, located near the French-Swiss border. It is a popular destination for skiing and mountaineering. Recently, the Mont Blanc area has been in the news due to a fatal avalanche on the Italian side of the massif, specifically along the Couloir Vesses, a freeride route in Courmayeur’s upper Val Veny. The avalanche resulted in the deaths of two skiers and injuries to another. Separately, though not directly related to Mont Blanc itself, a deadly fire occurred at a bar in Crans-Montana, a ski resort in Valais, Switzerland. While Crans-Montana is in the Swiss Alps, it's geographically distinct from the immediate Mont Blanc massif. These events highlight the inherent risks associated with mountain activities and the potential for tragedy in alpine environments.
